They are often deployed within terrain of jungle warfare or urban warfare.
History
The term sniper began as the verb “to snipe” in the 1770s when soldiers in British India had the appropriate skill to kill the “snipe”, thus the term “sniper.” In 1824 it became known as a sharpshooter, especially in the United States during the American Civil War, along with the term “skirmisher” which was used for military personnel that would break up enemy formations to thwart the enemy. Although the term sharpshooter originated in the 1820’s in America, it had been used prior to that in British newspapers as far back as 1801. Today, snipers are used as a part of two-man teams by the United States, United Kingdom and other military units throughout the world as both defense tactics and additional security measures in urban communities.
Military Doctrines
The military doctrines in regards to snipers in military units, tactics, and settings vary depending on the country the military resides in. For the most part, snipers are typically used in warfare to provide reconnaissance against the enemy from a concealed position which will reduce the fighting ability of their enemy. They will typically attack high-value target enemies like communication officers and related personnel. In Soviet Russia, the military doctrines of snipers include squad-level snipers, also called Soviet snipers. Military personnel who are snipers in the United States or United Kingdom military units are usually deployed in two-man sniper teams with a shooter and a spotter. They will typically be trained in both being a skilled shooter and spotter so that they can take turns during their stint as snipers. Two-man sniper teams were used regularly in Fallujah, Iraq in order to increase the military’s security in the urban environment. These snipers were armed with short range and long ranged weapons for enemies far away as well as those who came in close contact.
Missions
In today’s military units, snipers have a variety of missions with the majority of them involved in reconnaissance, surveillance, target marking for air-strikes, killing enemy officials and commanders, counter-sniper, and selecting targets for opportunity as well as the occasional destruction of military equipment. In the cases of destruction of military equipment of their enemies, snipers will use large caliber rifles such as the .50 BMS, McMilan Tac-50 and Denel NTW-20. Due to the various weaponry used by snipers in the military, individual military individuals are chosen to be trained in these areas.
